Lupus is a serious chronic inflammatory
disease
that affects many different organs such as the kidneys, lungs, and even the brain.
Lupus occurs when an individual’s immune system attacks its own tissues, making it an autoimmune disease. It is estimated that up to as many as 1.5 million people are affected by lupus. Because so many systems in the body are damaged from this condition, it can be extremely uncomfortable and difficult to manage. The complications from lupus vary from kidney failure, an increased risk of pneumonia, anemia, strokes and more. It is also important to note that developing lupus also increases one’s risk of cancer.
